Security Talks Real World Examples

January 22 , 2019 Meetup

Close to 30 talented ladies and few gentlemen met at Chronicle (Google X) to spend their evening talking security and sharing their personal wisdom with each other. Here is some of the insights from the meetup that I found interesting:

  • Security Professionals are no longer able to protect companies alone - we have to enable the entire organization and make each one of the employees responsible for the security of the companies we protect.
  • Great sources of information if you want to keep up with the latest trends: https://krebsonsecurity.com/, Verizon Reports, Conferences and Meetups.
  • Great Read if you are woman in security: How Women Rise by Sally Helgesen & Marshall Goldsmith.

I would like to thank all the incredible people and companies who helped us to make this meetup a success Aanchal Gupta and Alison Huml from Facebook , @Katherine Del Gesso from Credit Karma, @Magali Bohn from Chronicle Security/Google X Bryan, Jin, Nicole, Rui and Sumin from Holberton School Initiative!

Security Talks Real World Examples

Speakers:

  • Julia Minkowski - SDRM, MBA Topic: Device Authentication
  • Marina Segal - CISA, CRISC, C|CISO Topic: Compliance, Security and Risk Management Battlefield Stories

Summary:

We’ve discussed many topics and shared ideas and experience on variety of Security topics including Authentication and Cloud Migration. We also talked about is that we are seeing some positive numbers of women in leadership roles in general and specifically in technical C level roles. Deloitte Insights paper titled “Smashing IT’s glass ceiling – Perspectives from leading women CIOs” states the percentage of women technology chiefs is far higher than that of female CEOs and CFO.

Women in Cybersecurity Meetup

Speakers:

  • Cheryl Kwan - Program Manager, Identity Team, Google
  • Dana Kalsky - Sr. Technical Program Manager, Security, Salesforce
  • Shira Shamban - Data Initiative Lead, Dome9 Security

Summary:

We've discussed many things with our amazing speakers Cheryl Kwan, Dana Kalsky and Shira Shamban who presented and shared ideas and their experience on variety of Security topics. There was one more topic that stood out, that I, personally, found inspirational and wanted to share - Public Speaking and Confidence.

- How do you make this first step and getting out there on a stage?

- Where can you get that confidence to share YOUR experience and bring your ideas to the table?

The answer is pretty simple - find this safe environment where you can start practicing. It can be women only meetup where you feel less stressed, it could be your family of close friends, the key is to start and make a progress, all the time!
